The first thing that comes tom most people’s minds when you mention “network marketing” is pyramid scheme, or scam. Why is this? Well let’s take a look at MLMs as a marketing TOOL and not a get rich opportunity.
As a marketing consultant, I suggest MLM marketing structures to many businesses as a means of distributing product. “Why?”, do you ask, because it is one of the most powerful and profitable ways of marketing in existance, if done well.
See, businesses have many options on how they want to move their product. TV commercials, Print ads, Internet Searches, etc. Network marketing is just one method. Here is the philosophy behind it:
It’s basically finding commission only sales reps. Now finding reps that will work commission only is very difficult. Most want some salary to work full time, or don’t take it seriously and work part time. With Multi Level Marketing, your compensation is based on effort. You can make rediculous amounts of money if you are dedicated, and close to nothing if you are not. A perfect business model for businesses.
Now its a little easier to find someone to work commission only based on the fact that if they do succeed, they can make a huge income, but it is still difficult to find many people that will fit the mold of a “successful sales person”. Here is where the” networking” comes in to play. Why not compensate our sales people if they can find other successful sales people. It just makes sense. Now as a salesperson, you have 2 different ways to make money, sell the product, and find more sales people.
As a business, we know that the more reps we have out there, the more product we will sell, so does it not make sense to make it more lucritive to find new reps than just directly selling the product. And here is the “residual income factor”. Sales reps can now take a percentage of every sale their recruits ( or referred salespeople) make, thus making finding new recruits the primary focus.
Well as a company, we still need to sell product, not just have thousands of reps out there. So here is the kicker. It is now required to purchase the product in order to become a salesperson. Now finding new sales people and making sales go hand in hand.
Its a perfect storm for any business. Find as many sales people as possible, generously compensate the individuals who are successful, and not waste any money on the lazy, non motivated folk.. Here is a new problem, how can we make sure that we dont lose money on all the lazy people out there..By charging them a setup fee or for “training”.
Many people complain about having to pay to join a network marketing company. The fact is that it does take lots of money and time to create training materials, marketing materials, seminars, etc. So unless you can prove to us that you can sell the product, or you guarantee to work 40 hours a week under our watchful eye, you need to pay for the training fee. Its the same as financial companies making you pay for your licensing exams until you pass.
The next complaint is the price of the product. Most Network marketing products seem over priced. Why is this? The reason is to Pay YOU. After the cost of producing the product, commision needs to be paid out to you and the person who referred you, and so on. So the only profitable way is to mark up the price. Why does this not hurt a company? Because now that the sales structure is based on finding sales reps that purchase the product. The product cost becomes irrelevant and is now bundled into the cost of running your own business. This does make it more difficult to sell products to those not wanting to become a sales person, but as the company, the number of SALES REPS is the #1 priority.
So if you are a business considering using Network Marketing to distribute a product, you MUST focus on the opportunity, compensation structure, training, and corporate culture to be successful.
If you are a Network Marketing Rep, you must understand that the system is based on you finding the most reps to join the network, not necessarily selling the most product. Some maky think that because it is set up like this, it is a scam. Absolutely NOT. Don’t think of yourself as a busisness owner that sells a product. YOU ARE A INDEPENDADNT MARKETING TOOL THAT IS CONTRACTED OUT BY A COMPANY. Your job is to grow the network of distributors of a product. Much like a actor in a commercial selling a product, or a radio host talking about a product. You bring PEOPLE IN, not move product out.
